Glenmarie – A Popular Hangout

🕔06.Jul 2015

Since the successful hosting of the Eurasia Cup, Glenmarie G&CC has seen an increase in rounds played

popular1The Glenmarie Golf & Country Club was the venue chosen to host the inaugural edition of the Eurasia Cup in March 2014. The club went through a major refurbishment to accommodate European and Asian Tour standards and Club Manager En. Adi Shahar Mohd Radzi says that this has made the golf course more interesting and challenging to golfers.

The 36-hole Glenmarie Golf & Country Club stands as one of the most played and well-maintained golf courses’ in Malaysia and it was natural for a premier event such as the Eurasia Cup to take place there.

A whopping RM38 million was set aside to refurbish the Garden course, on which the event was played on because of its proximity to the clubhouse facilities although, the Valley course is much suited for international tournaments.

The aftermath of the Eurasia Cup certainly made the club even more popular amongst golfers because of the improved Garden course.

Glenmarie had always been at the forefront of being a pioneer in winning accolades especially when it came to keeping their greens in tip top shape. Not to mention being a famous networking venue for people wanting to make business connections. It is little known details like being the first one to use the superior grass species like the Bermuda MiniVerde, which provides excellent putting surfaces that makes the Glenmarie greens exceptional.

Your rescue pet may not have one but this particular Bermuda MiniVerde laid on the Valley course has its own birth certificate, although it was the more socially popular Garden course with Bermuda Tifdwarf that hosted the Eurasia Cup. The maintenance of the greens (and the amazing knowhow on the part of its managers) takes precedence at Glenmarie where major bucks have been spent in terms of staff, machinery and upkeep facilities that small details like grass species, cutting methods and height are not just a minor issue. A lot of experience and knowledge goes into practice here, making the club very popular indeed, whether they are members, tournament players, guests and specifically, government officials including ministers.

In fact, the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Golf Challenge uses Glenmarie as its host venue every year and this comes with the privilege of hosting other official functions and meetings too. However, being the favourite venue for all these national and international events also has its cons, especially for the members and guests who deemed this to be their favourite course to play.

Adi explained that they have to sometimes go over the limit during the weekends in providing tee-time slots. One course can take up to 30 flights but there is a possibility that it can go up to 36 in a day accommodating about 30 members and not withstanding guests too. Failure to make everyone happy can be quite a diplomatic incident in some instances. He further added that bookings are open every Tuesday and usually there is a long queue, which can lasts until 9pm starting from 4pm! This is how popular the club is so members can only reserve one tee-time per day and have to get there early for bookings.

Due to the changes that came about from organizing the successful Eurasia Cup, the club’s excellent presentation has given both Valley and Garden great characters, which is now bringing back the older member crowd to actively participate during in-house activities. The current membership number stands at about 2000 and there’s still place for another thousand. The rate for corporate and ordinary membership is priced at RM100,000 while Bumiputra’s are offered at RM80,000.

Additionally, over 80 Surabayan women have also been hired as caddies and they come trained by their own local institution. But this is not enough to fulfill the needs of this largesse 36-hole course, where a total amount of 75 flights for both courses may require up to 140 caddies at one time. With regards to this, local caddies are also hired to come in on a part-time basis to support the growing number of members and guests who are flying in flocks to bask in the glory of the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club.
